 Safety Harbor Historical Collections

The Safety Harbor Historical Collections currently contains hundreds of items relating to Safety Harbor history. The collections are split into the Safety Harbor Herald newspapers, photos, publications, and articles. More items continue to be added as our digitization project moves forward.

The Safety Harbor Public Library has currently has over 1000 pages of historic Safety Harbor Herald newspapers with scattered dates ranging from 1925 through 1989 preserved and accessible to the public. The newspapers are preserved and encapsulated in Mylar sleeves.  Grant funding allowed the Library to complete this project.

Summer 2013, the Library received a donation of additional newspapers from the Safety Harbor Museum and Cultural Center.  The Library is adding these to the digital collection to further preserve the history of Safety Harbor and the surrounding area.  This collection is valuable for local historians and anyone interested in the past. Grant opportunities are being investigated to further this project.

Pinellas Memory

The following libraries are contributors to Pinellas Memory:

 •Dunedin Public Library
 •Largo Public Library
 •Safety Harbor Public Library
 •Tarpon Springs Public Library

Contributing libraries are engaged in an ongoing process of increasing public access to full text newspaper articles, archival photographs, and other digitized historical media contained in the libraries’ collections.  New material is added on an ongoing basis. You are invited to browse each library’s collection individually, or search the entire collection by keyword.
At historypin you can browse selected photos from our historical collections and compare them with current Google Street View images. A great way to compare yesterday and today!

Safety Harbor Stories
Safety Harbor Stories is a project that aims to collect the history of our city through stories told by former and current Safety Harbor residents. We hope to have an archive that we will be able to share with future generations to remind them of where our city came from and how it got to where it is today.

By collecting these stories, we are building bonds with past and current residents through shared memories, family connections, and the pride that each person feels by being apart of our community.
