We’ve received several great questions from the community about the pier, so here are a few updates:
Why didn’t the City change the design of the pier?
The City is rebuilding the pier within the existing parcel. Any changes outside of the City-owned parcel would have required additional state and federal approvals, including a new submerged land lease. By utilizing elements of the previously approved and permitted design and location, the City was able to secure permits more quickly and move the project forward without delay.
When will the pier open?
The contractor has until December 2026 to complete construction.
Is the contractor on schedule?
Yes! The contractor remains on schedule. Even though the structure may look close to finished from the shore, there is still substantial work ahead.
Will there be a grand opening?
As we get closer to completion, the City will share details about an official opening date. Stay tuned!
Thank you for your continued patience and excitement as we work toward bringing the new pier to life!
After the 2024 Hurricane Season, Safety Harbor's Waterfront Park, Pier, Marina, Living Shoreline, and a portion of the Boardwalk sustained significant damage. Thirty-two of the thirty-five bollard lights along the trail remain inoperable, and the Pier was swept away. In response, the City has worked with our insurance carrier, the State, and federal government agencies to find the most effective solutions to repair and restore Waterfront Park, Fire Marshal Dick Brock Memorial Pier, and the Marina back to safe and operable conditions.
Individual project updates are listed and will be updated on the Hurricane Recovery Projects Page.
Project TimelineConstruction began on Monday, July 7, 2025, and projects are expected to be complete by the end of December 2026. Some projects are scheduled to be completed before the 18-month period.
Area ImpactsDuring construction, public access to Veterans Memorial Lane parking, Veterans Memorial Park shelters, the boat ramp, and the marina will be closed. These closures are necessary to provide a safe construction zone.
The restrooms at Waterfront Park will remain open to the public. Waterfront Park will be accessible from the north entry located near Jefferson Street.
The City is working with special event organizers to relocate any previously scheduled events at Waterfront Park or in the Veterans Memorial Park area during the construction time. Special event updates will be posted on SafetyHarborEvents.com in the event's listing.

What's ahead...
Waterfront Park Boardwalk RepairsThe boardwalk over Mullet Creek suffered damage during Hurricane Milton, including scouring and erosion around the creek pilings. This erosion may have compromised the structural integrity of the affected pilings. The City is currently working with Structural Engineers to conduct pile integrity testing to determine the pilings' condition and identify boardwalk repair solutions.
